Transports run every few weeks and we will have the dog on the next available transport once approved.
If you are not able to accept a dog until a specific time period, please apply at that time************ We are a volunteer run rescue and donate our time to these dogs.
IF you are not serious about moving forward in our adoption process, please do not apply.
If someone other than yourself is part of the decision making process, please make sure you have spoken with them and they are on board.
We really do not want to waste anyone's time if you are not serious about adopting this dog.
Carl, 9 year old, neutered male, Australian Shepherd mix, 32 pounds.
Carl is in a foster home in Houston, TEXAS and can transport out of state once an approved adopter is lined up! Carl and his sister Ellie were surrendered to the shelter when their owner suffered a stroke and became unable to care for the pair.
Unfortunately for both, they were in pretty severe health condition - arthritis, rotten teeth, intact, and afflicted by various skin and ear infections.
Poor Carl had scars that indicated someone may have tied his mouth shut.
Thankfully for both, a foster stepped up and we were able to save them and have nursed them back to health.
Right now, Carl does still bear scars on his muzzle and has arthritis which requires daily pain management for.
He has seen vets and chiropractors for x-rays and he has no medical issue, just "weak hips" and he takes carprofen to manage his pain.
He is quite active in spite of the stiffness and displays his pain as whimpering and slow movement.
Carl is very dog and human friendly, and has been around his sister, a small dog, and now much lager lb) dogs with no issues.
He doesn't actually play - he gets somewhat excited and loves to run beside them or bump into other dogs...
The most animated Carl gets to play is when his foster gets home and her big boys are excited - Carl thinks he is going to "get them" when they come running in.
He's not a player - once in a blue moon the dogs will get him a little spunky, but it lasts for about 5-10 seconds and playtime is over.
Carl is cat friendly - although he will sometimes chase her and then nonchalantly act like he wasn't just doing that because she will turn around.
So, a dog friendly cat with him would be fine.
Carl has not been around kids before but we have no reason to believe he wouldn't be friendly, although we typically recommend homes with kids over the ages of 10yrs or those who can understand and will respect animal behavior cues.
Carl does not like being grabbed and his body is not capable of being crawled on or pulled, as he is old and it would be painful.
Carl is also a bit of a hungry hungry hippo and likes to steal food, so little kids and snacks may not be a great idea for him! Like the gorgeous senior king that he is, Carl walks very well on the leash nice and loosely, paying no mind to passersby or other dogs.
He is trusted to be loose in the house while unsupervised and has not had any accidents or proven to be destructive.
He has been crated but absolutely hates it and will bark incessantly, never calming down.
He may do best in an x-pen or baby-gated area rather than crate, at least until he knows the area and what is/isn't allowed.
Carl is fed separate from the other dogs in his foster home not because he is aggressive or resource guards but he will steal food from the other dogs.
He has no shame in his food hunting game and will sneak anything within is reach.
He waits patiently for his treats and he has gotten a lot gentler with taking them.
When all the dogs are getting their nighttime treats, Carl is right there with the 4 big dogs and has never growled, etc.
Carl doesn't know the concept of space sometimes, and will just crawl/lay right by another dog if he wants.
He doesn't need to have a canine/feline sibling but would love the cuddling company if one was already in existence.
He's really the most adorable, lovable lil squirt! Carl is a low energy certified good boy but when something is new to him, he can't quite relax.
When he first arrived "home," Carl paced around and it took him a good bit of time to learn the place and the new environment, and then he was fine.
He is a nosy lil fella! He catches onto a routine very quickly and is a smart little cookie! He likes a routine and knows it.
Just because he is older, doesn't mean he doesn't love all of his daily walks & jogging time around the 3 acres ! Sometimes his body wants to move faster than his little legs and it cracks me up! He needs a moderate-low energy home to keep him young.
He loves following his foster mom around while she mows, chasing the outside cat when he is feeling spunky, and generally ruling his domain with a gentle fist.
The ideal home is someone who will love him so much and spoil him and let him enjoy life.
While he is corrected if he does something wrong that can get him into trouble, for the most part Carl is allowed to be free and be happy and be the cute teddy bear that he is.
He would love someone who is home a lot so he can spend so much time with his people with room to prance/walk around.
At his age, he deserves to do what he wants as long as it causes no harm to him or anyone else.
He isn't a cuddler or a couch potato to where he will sit right by you, so someone who doesn't expect that out of him.
He enjoys his comfy beds on the floor but to where he knows he can see you.
He can definitely be your shadow, he doesn't want to miss out on the action! ***Listed BREED and AGE - We are taking our best guess & recommendations from our veterinarian on age, breed and size when fully grown.
We rarely know a dog's exact age nor are we able to tell the true or full breed mix of dogs as our information is limited most of the time.
