Meet Cookie
A TRUE SURVIVOR STORY
Cookie is......
well...
one tough cookie.
Her story start with us, after after three pregnant momma dogs were dumped in a remote area of the reservation. All three momma dogs had puppies out in this remote sage brush covered area, in early October but by the time we found out about them and could help, only two mommas were left and only one puppy had survived...Cookie.
It has been nearly eight months now, since Cookie came to stay and what a brave and curious girl she has turned out to be.
She is a quirky combination of love bug and stinker with a clever mind and a big heart but has not fully overcome those strong instincts that allowed her to survive a harsh winter with no human help. She loves a good snuggle but sometimes does not know how to ask for them. In her foster home, she has developed the habit of running to her crate, to wait for attention and loves to lay her head on her foster mom's shoulder for a sweet snuggle then drift off to sleep.
One of the reasons she has been slow to give up her survival instincts, is the ready supply of doggy companions in her foster home, that make creating a bond with a human, less important. In a home where the human to dog ratio allows for more concentrated effort and forces her to turn to a human for security and support, we see her becoming an amazing friend and companion.
Cookie rides quietly in a vehicle and has been great for all vet visits. No theatrics or drama, when being handled. She is learning to be a good leash walker, but adventures outside the familiar, make her wary but she is still willing. She likes treats and toys, meal time, outdoor fun and though she would be hard pressed to admit it, snuggle time. She does great with routine, keeps a clean crate and is mostly housebroken, though not quite to the stage of asking to be let out. She would make a good watchdog or, with some guidance, a great running companion. She has a natural trot that covers a lot of ground with little effort.
Cookie lives with a variety of dogs and two very dog savvy kitties and does great.
Due to her past, introductions to new dogs can be frightening for her, so slower introductions work best.
In her foster home, two grandchildren visit regularly who are five and ten years old If they want to pet her, she must be leashed or she will stay jusssst out of reach but once the leash is on, she settles into a nice petting session and is gentle with both.
While we believe Cookie to be a mix of German Shepherd and Cattle dog, we of course, have no way of knowing for sure. She photographs bigger than she really is and is only 28 lbs, at eight months old. We do not expect her to mature beyond. 35lbs. The dog we believe to be her mother, was 50 pounds at three years old AND she is an incredibly sweet and intelligent girl who seems to have passed that gentle nature, onto Cookie.
If you look at this pups face, you can tell there is something very special about her. She is not turn key and will require patience to uncover her full potential but we have no doubt, with a kind human, she will blossom into the dog she was meant to be. She has already come so far from where she was. She just needs a little extra one on one time, to take her the rest of the way.
If you would like to meet this clever little beauty, please go to our website and submit the application. We are hoping to find a very special person for this very special girl.
Cookie is spayed and microchipped, up to date on her five way and rabies vaccinations and will not need boosters until January 2024. She has been fecal tested and treated for intestinal bugs and is flea and tick free. She came to us a terrified bag of baby bones but is now a super soft, super healthy, wonderfully smart and fully blank page on which to write your story with her.
