Cookie is a 5 year old long haired Chihuahua who was brought into a local vet clinic in critical distress.
The owners did not have the finances to help Cookie, and so she was surrendered.
When she was surrendered, she was limp and emaciated.
To get a diagnosis, we had to take her to a specialist hospital immediately.
After getting an ultrasound, they diagnosed her with Pyometra.
Surgery was authorized, and once they did her ovariohysterectomy , they discovered that she had a gall bladder rupture.
We were able to get her gall bladder removed (cholecystectomy) and her ovariohysterectomy the same night, at a cost of about $10,000.
We want to extend many thanks to our very generous and dedicated supporters.
Because of all of you, Cookie's life was saved.
This was a huge surgery for a very sick and tiny dog.
She weighed in at 1kg (2.2 lbs) when she was surrendered and has made a miraculous recovery.
She has now been in our care since August 28, .
We had to ensure she wouldn't have any post surgical complications before putting her up for adoption.
Cookie is now seeking a very specific forever home.
This is what she's looking for: - An Adult only home.
No kids, no future kids, no exceptions.
- A home where she can be an only child! She MAY be able to "co-exist" with another smaller dog, however, we honestly feel it would be completely unfair to another dog because Cookie can be quite intimidating, not accepting, jealous, and somewhat aggressive (and she harrasses our huge cats).
Homes without other pets will receive first priority for adoption.
- Her forever home must be financially stable, to be able to provide her dental in 6 months, with blood work prior to her dental, and to be able to do routine blood panels to check her liver values 2 x a year.
- Cookie is a very picky food eater, it took us a long time to find food that she will eat regularly.
That being said, her adopter must agree to continue feeding her the food she is on now.
She cannot afford to lose weight and changing her food will cause her to stop eating.
- She may not be suitable for apartment living because she is so vocal, and for a tiny dog, I have to say, she is extremely loud.
She's got a really strong set of lungs.
Depending on her new owners lifestyle, we can discuss her vaccine protocol.
Right now we are not re-vaccinating her, so her liver has every chance to heal after being so septic from her gall bladder rupture.
Cookie is sort of house trained.
She uses pee pads to pee on, but always misses the pee pads when she poops.
She can be trained to go outside, but with the winter coming up, I'm not sure how she will fare.
Cookie can be very vocal when left alone.
She does not like to be confined or crated.
She would indeed love to sleep in your bed and cuddle with you while you watch tv, BUT she should have a balanced life of "being a dog" as well.
She weighs in at 1.68kgs, and could stand to gain a little more weight, topping out at 2kgs.
Cookie does not like to be teased, and will growl if she's not happy with what you're doing.
If you ignore her warnings, she will take a nip at you.
It takes her some time to warm up to new people, so she won't love you right away.
We are seeking a home for Cookie within the Lower Mainland only so we can ensure that she is being well taken care of.
And if there are any issues, she can come back to us without any logistical difficulties.
Her adoption fee is $695.
An adoption application and home visit is required.
