Dexter is a 12-year-old Cairn terrier mix, and a very jolly dog. His tail is always going. He is very friendly, likes other dogs and children, but is not a pest. A change in circumstances for his previous family brought this senior dog to Fuzzy Pawz to find a forever home.
We are told that Dexter likes to swim! He also likes to dig in moist, bare ground after the sprinklers run. He does not make big holes, but does get himself dirty. He likes soft beds, sunshine, and snuggling. Like many light colored dogs, Dexter has reddish-brown tear stains. He does not like those cleaned and will pull away, but not bite or snap. The groomer said he was easy with her, except when it came to grooming his face. We have not cat tested him, but are told he does not like cats. He is great with strangers, coming up to be pet with his tail going a mile a minute.
Dexter has a heart murmur and requires medication twice daily, which he takes easily wrapped in a pill pocket or other treat. The medication runs about $50 a month. His heart condition doesn’t slow him down. He likes to play with other dogs and with toys, and wander the yard pulling up tufts of grass and barking at squirrels and birds. He may not be able to take long walks, but he is an elderly dog.
He will require an understanding home, and we highly recommend he go to a home with a pet door. Dexter has incontinence issues. However, if he has ready access outside through a pet door, he takes himself out 99 percent of the time to go potty. (His foster isn’t too sure that the other one percent of the time he isn’t marking in response to her male dogs.) A good enzyme urine odor eliminator is handy to have around. He is used to being crated at night, and goes into his crate on command. We expect he has problems finding the pet door in the dark. He also should be crated when left alone in the home just in case. He comes with male wraps (diapers) for those times he needs to be left alone free to roam indoors.
Please do not let this automatically cause you to reject him. He is a sweetie pie, and when in the house with people around, he is quite trustworthy about using the pet door! He is a lover and deserves a loving home back.
Dexter is neutered, microchipped, and current on vaccinations.
