Meet Melon
Melon, 2 years old, neutered male, Hound mix, 50 pounds. He is in a foster home in Maple Valley, WA and is ready for meet and greets! He recently transport to an adopter in Washington and their small dog is very afraid of him. Melon has tried to make friends, but she is too scared. He is now in a foster home.
This guy was either dumped or abandoned in a neighborhood in Texas. We have no idea why. He found his way to a good Samaritan's house where she fed and watered him. He was still there the next day so she offered to help foster him. He has great manners and it very much feels he was someone's dog at some point.
Melon likes playing with other dogs. His foster home in Texas had small dogs in the home and he would try to get them to play. He would take direction from his foster mom as they did not want to play with a dog his size. His current foster home as 4 other dogs. He really likes to play and will take the hint when a dog doesn't want to play, but will move on to someone else to see if they will play. One of the dogs in the home is not a fan of his playfulness so Melon does not engage with him. He does well and understanding dog's cues and corrections. He does not react. If there is another dog in the home, we strongly recommend it's a dog who enjoys playing (wrestling, chasing, etc.).
With that being said, we also think he would do well as the only dog. He is a strong moderate energy dog and will need physical/mental outlets. If there is not another dog to provide those outlets, then he needs consistent exercise. He is not a "high" energy dog, but if not enough physical stimulants he gets bored. He loves his walks and will pull slightly in the beginning and then responds well to redirection. He would also make a wonderful jogging/running partner. He stays close and makes it easy to run. He would do great on hikes, trails etc. He is generally pretty worn out after a run!
He has seen cats out on walks, but does not live in a home with a cat. He ignores any cats that he has encountered. His foster mom in Texas fed a stray cat colony so he was around/near those cats without issue.
He currently shares a home with an 8 year old. We have found that he can be a little mouthy. It is gentle and playful, but we think a home with kids 12 years and older would be best. He often thinks your hands are toys and does respond very well to redirection and correction. He really craves attention and will sometimes use his mouth to get your attention. His current foster mom has worked on this with him and he is so eager to learn/please.
He does well meeting strangers, but will jump up due to excitement. He is a very happy and energetic boy.
He is very cuddly and affectionate. He would love to crawl into your lap if you let him. He rides great in the car. He jumps right in and sits until you've reached your destination. He likes to play with toys and loves large chewing toys/bones. He can be goofy at times. He is very smart and eager to please.
Please note, since he previously transported to the PNW, his adoption donation is $275.00. This looks different on the adoption application, so why we wanted to mention it here.
