Learn more at www.blackcatrescue.com.Molasses is playful and active, but also very relaxed, friendly, not skittish at all, and independent. He enjoys being stroked on his cheeks and chin and right above his tail especially, but more selectively on his back and only sometimes on the top of his head. He loves being
brushed in all these places as well. He's generally not interested in belly rubs. He rarely gets in my lap, though he was reported to be a lap cat in his previous home. He will occasionally tolerate being held but doesn't like it. He sometimes sleeps in my bed. He seeks my attention when he wants to interact and LOVES to play. He's very playful and an excellent hunter. He loves wand toys, laser pointers, stalking/hunting play, and catnip toys. He's chatty when excited, especially when you get home or he's about to be fed. His vocalizations include quiet meows, chirps, and purrs. He uses a scratcher and prefers a flat/floor type. His litter box use has been perfect.
Has the cat ever scratched (claws out) you?
-Yes, sometimes when playing and sometimes when bored and looking for attention.
Does the cat ever nip (teeth without breaking skin) you?
-Yes, occasionally when playing, for attention, and when he wants to be fed.
Has the cat ever bitten you (breaking skin)?
-Once, a light bite when he didn't want to be picked up.
How does the cat react to new people?
-Social and relaxed- he really likes being around people and isn't at all fearful.
Does that cat have any cute/quirky traits that aren't covered by the previous questions?
-He loves paper! He likes to sleep on paper bags and chase toys over crinkly paper surfaces. He
sticks his tongue out after bathing sometimes and it's really cute! He also loves head-butting
your legs as a greeting.
What's so special about Molasses? He loves companionship and will greet you every time you walk in by chirping and brushing against your leg. He's a great balance of friendly and independent- he isn't needy, but he likes to sit with/near you and enjoy your company, and he is always excited to play with you!
What are his challenges and how have you found to best manage them?
-His main challenge is that if he is understimulated or bored, or sometimes when he is hungry,
he will occasionally chase after and jump on people, with some scratching and play-biting. As a
large and athletic cat, he can be tricky to deter. I think with other animals and people in the
house, regular playtimes, and especially if he could have safe outdoor time for enrichment,
these behaviors could be managed. Also, when he is hungry, he "requests" to be fed with head
butting, patting his human with paws, and eventually escalating to nipping; he can be distracted
from this with play. He enjoys scratching flat surfaces and sometimes scratches rugs and a
wicker basket in the house. Putting out other scratchers for him helps minimize the rug
scratching.
