*Please note, once completing the initial screen you will be connected with the placement for a video chat. Transports run every few weeks and we will have the dog on the next available transport once approved. If you are not able to accept a dog until a specific time period, please apply at that time.***
Pearl, 11 years old, spayed female, Labrador mix, 48 pounds. She is in a foster home in Houston, TEXAS and can transport to an approved adopter.
Pearl was owner surrendered to a shelter in Houston. She found herself almost immediately on the euthanasia list :( She was very terrified (as you can imagine) and stayed care for some time at her foster home. She has been with her foster mom since mid November 2022.
Pearl must have a home who will be very patient as we imagine some of her newly found confidence will regress in a new home. Her family must be willing to go at her pace and allow her the time she needs to settle and feel comfortable. If you are looking for a dog who will show up right away and be wiggly and excited to see you, Pearl is NOT your girl. She will need time to before she feels safe to give you love.
She is very dog friendly and shares a home with 4 other dogs (and fosters coming and going). In general she is shy and greets everyone cautiously. She is not one to engage in play, but does like to run around with the other dogs outside. Oh and she likes to chase squirrels!
We have no history with cats, but would also note she is the sweetest old lady you'd ever meet. She is not fast or does not move quickly, so we think cats would be okay. But again, she hasn't been around them.
There is an 11 year old child in the home and for a couple of months, Pearl would just steer clear of her. Now that she is coming out of her shell, she is comfortable with pets. If the house becomes too noisy (dogs barking or too many friends over) she will retreat to a bedroom. We would recommend a home with older kids who will give Pearl space as she needs it. If there are no kids in the home, but visit often please be aware she may be too shy to interact with them.
Pearl does not walk on leash. She pancakes to the ground when a leash is put on her. She is fairly low energy and is content napping in the house or hanging out in the yard.
For the first few weeks, she would not go outside to potty (too scared). After she felt more comfortable, she then felt it was okay to venture into the yard. She gets up and alerts when she needs to go out with no issue. We would anticipate this being similar pattern in a new home. She has no issues in a crate and is very chill. She also has zero issues left in the house unsupervised.
She is not too interested in toys or bones. She typically pokes around the backyard or strolls around the house. Most days she is laying in the home office or a bedroom. She does not need (or want) a lot of activity. She would be fine as an only dog too. Her foster mom said Pearl and another low energy dog have daily (and nightly) snoring contests!
Pearl is absolutely adorable, loving, sweet, silly and affectionate once she feels comfortable showing her true self. When she first came to us, she was overweight and we had some blood work completed to make sure there were no lingering health issues. Thankfully, all her levels looked great. Her foster mom has done a wonderful job helping her slim down and it will be important for her to maintain a healthy weight. She can now jump down from a bed or the couch and even does doggie stretches!
Her ideal home is quiet and will give her a lot of time to feel comfortable. They will be very patient during this process and will be okay with her having accidents until she feels safe enough to go outside. She will need a fenced in yard as she will not walk on leash. Your time and patience will pay off and she will shower you with gratitude!
