Meet Ritchie
Please read the bio in full for answers to your questions. In the event you have a question that is not covered in the bio, please email [email protected]. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application.
Please note that because all of our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be about an hour of Wilmington, DE in order for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in person home visit.
Ritchie is an adorable 8lb, approx 10-12yr old mix breed (our best guess is poodle/terrier/chi ?) Ritchie tells a sad story of being turned into a partner shelter with many other animals when his owner passed away. He has clearly been undersocalized, and came to us extremely shutdown and frightened. We get a sense that the household he was living in was a bit 'overwhelming ' for most of the animals that came from there, and all seemed to be lacking in current, updated medical care.
His foster home has had a very non-threatening, and go slow approach with this little guy which has worked very well. He is slowly but surely opening up to being held, receiving affection, and becoming part of a pack. For this reason, we will be looking for a very low-key, quiet home where Ritchie will thrive, and slowly come into his personality. He currently lives with male, female, large and small dogs. He has yet to learn leash skills, but loves a romp around a fenced in yard! He is very quiet, and is not 100%, but improving greatly on his housebreaking. Ritchie can be a very picky eater, but once you figure out his appetite for the day, he dives right in!
Ritchie had been neutered by the shelter, and received a dental there. We updated all his labwork and spent several weeks clearing an infection that lingered from his past. He is slow to put on weight, but we've somehow managed - despite his picky appetite- to put a pound or two onto his tiny frame. While in our care his vaccines were updated - fecal and urine checked out as negative - heartworm negative - and all bloodwork negative.
Our best home recommendation would be a very low-key, calm household - with or without another pup ( although at times , another low key senior pup helps ease a guy like Ritchie into the home) An owner that allows a slow approach for Ritchie to come into his personality. A home with a fenced in yard, - he loves lounging on the deck. Basically a home that will accept this adorable little guy as a shy natured pup who needs time to blossom................
