Sam, 2 years old, neutered male, Retriever mix, 63 pounds. He is in a foster home in HOUSTON, Texas and can transport out of State once an adopter is approved.
This guy was found roaming the streets in a known area where dogs are dumped. He is a really wonderful dog and we happy one of our fosters found him!
His current foster home does not have any dogs, but he was in a foster home previously with other dogs and he loved them! He has great manners and would run and play with the other dogs. He's a younger guy so he would do great with another dog who wants to engage in play. When passing other dogs on leash he does not have any reaction. He also walks really great on leash!
Sam is an energetic guy who likes to run in the yard. He does do some play biting, so we recommend a home with kids 10 years and older. His foster dad is working with him on this too. We have no history with cats. He does like to chase down small animals in the yard (squirrel, possum).
He is house broken and will cry a little bit when first crated, but then settles down. He has not shown any resource guarding and takes treats gently. He likes to play keep away with his toys, but will let go if you get a hold of it. He is a fast learner and eager to learn.
His foster dad describes his energy like this, "He is very chill at home for long periods of time, but he does need some time to play outside with fetch and keep away games with different toys. He will almost always chase a ball or toy that is thrown or kicked. Catches a few in his mouth, too"
Sam goes on walks and really loves them. He is looking for a home with consistent physical/mental stimulation. We have found he is a sensitive guy and really picks up on the emotions in the home. It initially took him about a week to start to open up to his foster dad. He really loves getting pets and praise.
Sam is very affectionate. He can be a little shy when first meeting strangers. He tends to shy away. He rides well in the car. He likes the quiet areas of the house. The rooms near the street that have more noise, he tends to stay out of.
His foster dad has this to say, "Sam is the best foster I have had and one of the best dogs I’ve known personally. He is an excellent companion and very affectionate. He does shed. And he does need to get out for exercise and play daily. He is VERY lab like to me. Goofy. Makes funny squeaking and yawning sounds. Tail always wagging. Wants his butt scratched. Very toy-in-mouth and fetch oriented.
