Meet Shelby
Shelby is noted on his medical records as being a Cane Corso mix. I don't know what his "mix" is. He's almost 3 months old currently, and weighs in at about 15 pounds. At his last vet appointment, 1/22/2024, he weighed in at 10.5 pounds. A typical Cane Corso puppy at this age would weigh in the 25-35 pound range, so I have absolutely no idea what Shelby's adult weight will be. He could play catch up and zoom up in weigh over the coming weeks or he could maintain his current growth rate and be a smaller adult dog. We have been aggressively treating his roundworm burden and that may now allow him to start piling on weight.
As of the writing of this profile, I'lll guess he'll be in the 60 pound range, though a typical male Cane Corso can weigh in at 100+ pounds. His breed mix could also have been a much smaller dog and he'll remain in the medium adult dog range.
So if you're considering adoption of Shelby, please be prepared for a medium sized dog all the way up to an xl sized dog. I have no idea of his final adult weight at this point in time.
Shelby is a very confident puppy. He can be assertive when he wants something but he also has a very calm and sweet nature. Training and socialization will be critical to help to shape Shelby's temperament and ensure he's guided to the softer side of his personality, so an adopter that is excited about professional training and helping their dog be the best dog they can be is important.
Shelby will need a large dog breed experienced adopter and preference will be given to those with Cane Corso experience. The adolescence stages of a Cane Corso will require an tremendous amount of patience, structure and consistency and an adopter willing to work through those crucial times will be important.
Cane Corso's are an incredibly sensitive breed, so leading and training with kindness will produce the best results. Daily training and socialization beginning now for Shelby and continuing throughout his entire life will be very important.
