@" Snoopy" ,s Personality:
Snoopy is a Formosan Mountain Dog cross just over a year old with submissive and timid temperament. But he is also very loving and sweet when he is bonded with the handler. Some of rescue dogs usually are afraid of men, and so is Snoopy. Nevertheless, the foster family has been working on this issue with him by introducing him to male members in the family slowly and with lots of treats and positive compliments. By making this into a daily exercise, he has shown improvement gradually.
Snoopy is very friendly towards dogs. He is very sociable and plays nicely with other dogs in the park. He also loves to go out and do activities, such as hiking, running, or training. He is a natural leash walker and does not require leash train. He knows to walk beside the handler and constantly checking on the handler. We think this might be out of fear, thus he walks nicely beside the handler. The foster family has been encouraging him while he walks nicely with treats and positive compliments. And he does know that he is a good boy! When he feels more comfortable walking with you, he will then start sniffing around and become more relaxed.
Snoopy’s recall is also very well! When he is bonded with the handler, he will come back to you when called. He also understands “No” when he is not supposed to go near certain area, such as the road. He would stop when commanded and come back to you when called. But the bond needs to be established beforehand.
He is very gentle when taking treats or eating. Though sometimes when he is afraid, he will not eat. He does not have food aggression and will wait for his food patiently.
He is also ok with small children and does not mind them.
Current foster walks him 3 times a day, and a short pee break before bedtime to ensure no accident throughout the night.
Snoopy requires constant training to conquer his fearfulness. And he shows improvements by learning commands and practice with the handler together. Right now, he has learned to sit, stay, down, look at me, and shake (hand). New adopter will need to continue training with him to boost his confidence and correct his fear.
Since he is the kind of dog that fixates his attention to only one handler, he has a bit of separation anxiety when he does not see the handler. Current foster family has given him a space of his own (a crate with comfortable bed and blanket) and lead him to his safe space and ask him to stay there and be calm. This has shown improvement with the anxiety issue. When he is afraid or anxious, he might pee or poop out of fear. Handler needs to make sure he is at a calm state before leaving or having any interaction with him.
Other than his fearful issue, he is truly a sweet loving dog. And he has all the attention on one owner, and does not need a lot of treats to do tricks. He will do anything you ask when he is in love with you. And he will be a great companion if you have the patient and willingness to help him grow.
