******Please note, once completing the initial screen you will be connected with the placement for a video chat.
Transports run every few weeks and we will have the dog on the next available transport once approved.
If you are not able to accept a dog until a specific time period, please apply at that time************ We are a volunteer run rescue and donate our time to these dogs.
IF you are not serious about moving forward in our adoption process, please do not apply.
If someone other than yourself is part of the decision making process, please make sure you have spoken with them and they are on board.
We really do not want to waste anyone's time if you are not serious about adopting this dog.
Sunflower, 13 month old, spayed female, labrador retriever/hound mix, 50lbs.
Sunflower is in a foster home in Houston, TEXAS and can transport out of state once an approved adopter is lined up! Sunflower LOVES to play and plays well with others - she is high energy and will continue playing even after the others have stopped.
She enjoys running and chasing, jumping and wrestling with any dog who will entertain her antics.
She is still learning to pick up cues from other dogs and has come a long way since being saved from the shelter.
Now, she is learning to respect when other dogs are done/tired and to leave those who don't want to play alone.
Sunflower currently lives with two 35lb neutered males and will play with both at the same time or individually.
She loves all dogs and will run straight to them without hesitation, which may cause issues with a dog who is anxious in the beginning.
Her excitement is 100% "let's be friends and have fun" and never aggressive or dominating.
We have no history with cats or kids, but Sunflower does have a high prey drive and pulls/lunges excitedly when seeing cats on walks.
She is a strong jumper and may unintentionally knock over little kids or those who are unstable, so we would recommend a home with kids over the age of 12.
Sunflower is currently learning proper leash and walk etiquette, so a wide range of behavior is currently observed.
She has made a lot of progress since picking up from the shelter though and as she is given more training opportunities, the better she will continue to do! Sunflower is not fully house trained but is mostly house trained.
She relieves herself when taken outside or or walks but has had the occasional accident in the house.
She is crated when unable to be supervised and at night.
She doesn't yet "love" her kennel and has to be physically placed inside - she doesn't fight you, just can tell she is sad - but does well relaxing once in.
Her foster has made her crate very welcoming and comfortable - blankets and a toy, quiet/dark room with a humming air purifier.
Sleeps through the night in the crate (blanket/s placed overtop at the time).
Sunflower is fed separately - and with a slow feeder - from the other dogs, not because she is territorial about food but because she will steal it if it's accessible.
She behaves very well by herself and will sit and wait until bowl is placed.
She loves to play with toys and chew on bones, and should be supervised with toys as she can destroy/eat easily if in that mood.
She will always "sit" and is currently learning to take "easy." She calmly watches people in the kitchen cooking/preparing food, and is learning to "relax" while eating, getting much better as it's possible to eat around her without her stealing the food.
Her foster is also working with her on "house manners," - how to relax and settle, and be free with supervision.
Sunflower has quickly picked up on relaxing on the couch and does not grab things that she shouldn't - just her toys and bones.
Sunflower will need an active home with someone that will spend lots time with her going on multiple daily walks and playing outside.
She is a "puppy" and has a lot of energy to burn.
She could be the only dog in the home but would enjoy living with another pup if one was there.
She would be well served by additional time to interact with dogs and learning when/how much playing is acceptable.
Sunflower is VERY affectionate and constantly seeks it out, enjoying cuddling up with you.
She can be very excitable and will jump up but loves all people.
She is a treat motivated people pleaser, so training has been progressing at a great pace.
She literally started at zero training or acceptable dog behavior when picked up from the shelter and has learned so many good behaviors in just one month.
If someone is willing to put in the time and energy with her, she is going to make an absolutely amazing pet for someone.
She will thrive if she has a daily routine that includes multiple daily walks and time to playing outside with her person or other dogs.
