Meet Trixie
Trixie is a 6 month old, spayed Female, Border Collie/Terrier mix, 35 lbs
Behavior: Such a smart girl. Sweet and snuggly. She knows "sit", "come", and is very aware and attentive to working for her food reward. She is affectionate and wants attention, as any 6-month-old puppy does (still jumps and mouths), she is agile and active. She would be fun for an active couple, hiking or agility puppy. She is good with children but they must be able to accept her puppy energy (tested with four 11 year old kids).
She has a cutest habit of chattering her teeth when she is excited and wants to please you. She shows no resource guarding when eating - I put my hands near her mouth and all over her body and take the food away while eating without issue. Due to her deprivation history, it will be best to feed her separately in her crate until she has decompressed.
Energy Level: Trixie is high energy and very athletic. She will be a petite boned small/medium adult.
Good with dogs: She has been fostered in a pack of large dogs (shepherds) of all ages, a Jack Russell terrier, 3 toy chihuahuas and another large breed puppy her age. She is a very active puppy and likes to wrestle and play. Any adult dogs around her need to be open to playing. She also likes to try to play with and chase small dogs (who can be intimidated by her energy). She does take adult dogs’ social cues and backs off if they give her indicators. She has no aggression.
Good with cats: She is a very active puppy and likes to chase small dogs or cats.
Housebroken – Yes. She will whine when needs to go out, but she is also puppy pad trained if needed while she is learning her new environment. She needs regular opportunities to go outside.
Training: She is calm on the leash and beginning leash training. She is getting the hang of playing fetch, is crate trained, rides in car nicely, allows you to look in her mouth. She knows sit and come.
Crate Trained: She is crate trained and has had no accidents in her crate. She is brought out to relieve herself as late as possible at night (usually 10:30pm and is fine until 7 am). If she needs to go out she will bark. She is quiet sleeping in crate once she settles in at night. She likes to chew a bone while crated.
Behaviors that need attention: She is a puppy. She will chew and shred cloth toys so she will need chews toys that are sturdy. She loves her toys! She will jump when excited, but if you kneel down, and speak to her she settles down. Once she becomes secure, confident in her family and a bit older this will resolve. At present, she can jump over baby gates very gracefully (super great for agility play/training) so crating is recommended. The foster home has been using a vibration (not shock) collar to remind her not to bark for attention when left in crate. Vibration collar is working nicely. She will bark if put in crate and not tired out from playing in the yard. She can be vocal to get attention when she wants to come indoors, she is very smart as most Border Collies. She communicates with her owner not only vocally but with eye contact and actions.
Good in car: Rides like a little charm.
Ideal Home: An active couple with older children or grandkids that will spend time walking her and playing with her. She is extremely smart and needs mental stimulation from the owners, but she does curl up and snuggle also. She would love to have another, older dog in the home that is also semi-active and can help teach her as a role model. She would be fun for an active couple, hiking partner or agility puppy.
Rescue Story: Trixie (name assigned by the shelter), and her sister were dumped on the streets of Texas and brought in as strays to the shelter. Trixie had Coccidia, a common bacterium in puppies that came from unsanitary environments. She was in a high kill Houston shelter that weeds out dogs to euthanize for any reason they can when the shelter is full. She found herself on the euthanasia list because she had Coccidia, which is easily treated! She has completed her treatment for Coccidia and also Panacur (deworming) and is now ready for her home.
All our dogs are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested, microchipped, and dewormed. Trixie is heartworm negative.
