Who would have thought that such an adorable and cute pooch originated from the heavy, active and hardworking Arctic sled dogs? These tiny pooches are close relatives of the strong and the mighty American Eskimo Dog. The graceful Samoyed, the robust Norwegian Elkhound, and the clever Schipperke, and they all belong to the Spitz family.
Pomeranians originated from the region between Poland and Germany. Which is called the Pomerania region, where they are popularized by the royalties such as Queen Victoria. Early Poms are much bigger than their modern counterpart, which sometimes weigh as much as 30 pounds. And throughout the years the Pom has decreased its size by almost half, which we know and love today.
Aside from actors and royalties, many personalities owned Pomeranians, including Sir Isaac Newton, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and even Martin Luther King.
Pomeranians, or Poms, is a small breed of Spitz are characterized by their triangular-shaped heads and small upright ears. Which makes them akin to foxes, albeit tiny and more fluffy. Palms usually weigh from 3 pounds (usually teacups variety) up to 7 pounds. The most distinctive characteristic of the Poms is their long, thick, fluffy and feathery coat. While its tail is fluffed up and fans forward over the back. Poms usually comes in any solid color. The most common and admired ones are muted copper, red, pure white, cream, blue, black and any shade of brown.
Almost all Poms recognizes how glamorous and gorgeous they are. Especially with its gloriously fluffy coat, and it really shows in their personality. They are known to be very expressive, clever and energetic. Poms are a not known to be submissive and have this fearless temperament. Sometimes making them take up other dogs or animals often twice or triple their size.
If not for its diminutive size, Poms are capable watchdogs and have that urge to take charge of guarding his family. Carning him the reputation of being a small dog with a big, courageous personality.
The Love They Need
Since Poms have this fabulous coat that sheds, they don’t need excessive grooming. (Also, considering its size compared to larger, hairy dogs). Brushing his coat a couple of times a week is more than enough to get rid of tangles and mats all over his coat. Bathing is also an option, and bathing him every few months or weeks is enough to keep his coat in good condition. Trimming his nails, cleaning his ears and brushing his teeth every few weeks are also essential in keeping them properly groomed.
It is also essential to feed Poms depending on its age, size, and metabolism. High-quality dog food, either wet or dry (preferably dry to minimize messing up its coat during meals). Vaccination is also important to avoid serious diseases such as Kennel cough, Canine parvovirus, Canine distemper, and rabies. Frequent visits to the vet are also important to make sure that your Pom’s health is always in check.
