Many myths are surrounding Pit bull dogs. So, it might help to know about the Pit bull breed. I am wondering how you decided this is a myth. Nobody says every pit bull will become a vicious killer. What the facts say, though, is that when this does happen, there are poor results. So why pick this breed when there are better choices for most people. Pit bulls are fighting breeds. We will call them “catch” dogs or “bullbaiting “dogs. Let us call them to catch dogs because bull baiting is illegal in this country, probably not standard anyway.
What Owners Should Know About The Pit Bull Breed
Pit bulls will not turn on their owners or other people. They are big energetic dogs, though, and have a bite response that is powerful and tenacious. When biting a human, it is horrifically damaging. So here we have a dog that is wired to do a job better than other dogs and meant to dominate at this job. These are the behaviors that this type of dog has: chase a big pig, attack it, bite it, hold on and keep holding on even if it hurts.
Most of the bulldogs I have met have had a good temperament as well. I have heard that female English Bulldogs can be more territorial and aggressive than males, so the dog’s gender may be something you want to consider.
The bottom line is all dogs have their personalities. Generally speaking, yes, English Bulldogs are family-friendly dogs. Still, it’s hard to say for sure how a specific English Bulldog will behave in a given context without observing and getting to know the dog.
An English Bulldog breeder may be able to help you choose a puppy with an appropriate demeanor. Lester’s breeder suggested that he was a “mama’s boy” because he whined whenever he was not by the breeder’s side, unlike the other more “independent” puppies in the litter. Sure enough, even after three and a half years, Lester is as big a baby as ever.
My advice would be to do your research. Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into with an English Bulldog. Pitbulls are high maintenance.
Some Other Things To Bear In Mind
Make sure you choose a reputable breeder and interview them before you go and visit. You want to make sure you feel good about the breeder before you put yourself and your family in a position that will be tough to walk away from should any issues arise.
It is good to take out pet insurance if you adopt an English Bulldog. As pleasant as Pitbulls are, they are not known for robust health. Last fall, an emergency trip to the vet cost me about $2,000. I had to pay the full amount upfront, but my insurer, Healthy Paws Pet Insurance, reimbursed me $1,500. I am happy I had pet insurance coverage for Lester.
Lastly, and this goes without saying, really, never leave small children alone with any dog, no matter how well behaved or how good with children, you believe it to be. Dogs are animals, and even the most docile dogs can act unpredictably.
